Birmingham City in discussions for ‘ideal’ Sunderland deal, confirms Chris Davies

Chris Davies has confirmed that Birmingham City are in discussions to make Patrick Roberts’ loan move from Sunderland a permanent one.

Roberts has grown into a fan favourite at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park during his time with the Blues, contributing three goals and four assists across 22 Championship appearances. In a challenging campaign overall, the 28-year-old has been one of the few bright spots, with his recent form underlining his importance to the side.

The winger has been particularly influential of late, scoring once and providing two assists in his last two league outings. His performances have fuelled calls from supporters for Birmingham to secure his services on a long-term basis — and that outcome now appears possible.

Davies revealed that negotiations are ongoing, although several factors still need to align before a deal can be finalised.

“We are looking at that,” he told Birmingham Live. “I know those conversations are taking place and we are hopeful, but there are a few parts of that that have to work. That would be ideal.”

Making Roberts’ move permanent would not only secure a proven Championship performer but would also free up a valuable loan slot. He is currently one of four loan players at the club, with Championship sides permitted to name five loanees in a matchday squad.

That flexibility could prove useful, with reports suggesting Birmingham are close to signing Brighton winger Ibrahim Osman on a six-month loan. According to The Brighton Base, Brighton & Hove Albion are prepared to cancel Osman’s current spell at Auxerre to facilitate a move to the Midlands.

Osman, who joined Brighton from Nordsjaelland for around £16 million, is capable of playing on either wing or through the middle. The 21-year-old is still awaiting his senior debut for the Seagulls but has already gained experience through loan spells at Feyenoord and Auxerre. He would become Birmingham’s third loanee from Brighton this season, following James Beadle and Eiran Cashin.

Elsewhere, Birmingham are also reported to have made progress in talks to sign highly rated striker August Priske. Danish outlet Tipsbladet claims a €7 million (£6m) agreement has been reached, with the 6ft 4in forward expected to travel to England soon to discuss personal terms.

With movement on several fronts, Birmingham’s transfer plans appear to be gathering pace as Davies looks to strengthen his squad for the remainder of the season.
