Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner delivers his verdict over their 1-1 draw match against Charlton Athletic at St Andrew’s

Tom Wagner Reacts After Birmingham City Held by Charlton at St Andrew’s

Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner shared a brief but pointed reaction on Instagram after the Blues were frustrated in a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on Saturday.

It proved to be a disappointing afternoon for Birmingham, whose hopes of pushing closer to the Championship play-off places were checked by a Charlton side struggling for form.

The hosts went ahead in the first half through captain Christoph Klarer and came close to extending their advantage, with Demarai Gray striking the woodwork twice.

However, Birmingham were unable to capitalise on their dominance and were punished midway through the second half when Charlton substitute Tyreece Campbell scored just minutes after coming on.

The draw brought an end to Charlton’s poor run, having slid from sixth to 17th after five straight defeats. Birmingham, meanwhile, finished the weekend 12th in the table, sitting five points outside the play-off positions.

Wagner’s message after the match

Posting on Instagram after full-time, Wagner expressed his feelings succinctly, writing:
“Always together stronger. Always. KRO.”
The message was accompanied by an image of Klarer, reflecting the collective frustration felt after a game many supporters believed Birmingham should have won.

That mood was echoed by the club’s official account, which posted: “We’re forced to settle for a point.”

Concerns growing over Birmingham’s form

Saturday’s result added to a worrying run for the Blues, who have now managed just one win in their last five Championship matches. Prior to the Charlton draw, Birmingham had suffered back-to-back defeats against Southampton and QPR, leaving them stranded in mid-table.

Despite the club’s long-term ambition — including ongoing plans for a new stadium — progress this season has been hindered by inconsistency. Birmingham have yet to put together a run longer than three games without defeat, and recent results have seen them slip back after briefly closing in on the play-offs.

With the Championship looking particularly open this season, Wagner may feel Birmingham’s resources should allow them to compete higher up the table, even after their promotion from League One at the end of last season.

As a result, pressure could begin to increase on manager Chris Davies. Wagner has publicly supported him so far, but unless results improve and momentum builds, scrutiny is likely to intensify.

Wagner’s restrained but frustrated reaction to the Charlton draw may be an early reflection of broader dissatisfaction with a season that has yet to find consistency.
