Birmingham City’s daring three-signing January strategy has been revealed in full

Birmingham City are quietly putting the pieces in place for a major January overhaul, with sources revealing plans for three key signings as the club eyes a serious second-half surge.

The ambitious Championship side are actively scanning the market for a striker, a left-back and a commanding midfield presence, with funds already ring-fenced despite heavy investment across the last two summer windows. Sitting 13th in the table, the Blues remain just five points off the play-off places and firmly believe promotion is still within reach.

That belief is fuelled by the club’s long-term vision. Birmingham’s hierarchy remain determined to fast-track their return to the Premier League, a stance underlined by the announcement of a proposed 62,000-seat stadium back in November. The new venue is targeted for completion ahead of the 2030–31 season, with co-owner and chairman Tom Wagner prepared to commit a staggering £3billion, alongside a further £2.4bn in government-backed transport upgrades.

Such investment only reinforces the mood around St Andrew’s: Birmingham mean business. With standout performers such as Jay Stansfield, Patrick Roberts and Demarai Gray already delivering in the second tier, the addition of further quality in January could ignite a genuine play-off charge.

The Championship’s notorious unpredictability only strengthens that optimism. Hull City currently hold the final top-six spot, while several clubs — including 16th-placed West Brom, just six points adrift — sense opportunity. With so little separating mid-table from contention, momentum could change rapidly.

However, pressure is beginning to mount on head coach Chris Davies. While guiding Birmingham to the League One title last season was a significant achievement, expectations are far higher this time around. A three-match winless runhas stalled progress and allowed rivals to edge clear.

The former Tottenham assistant now faces a defining period. A swift turnaround is required to keep Birmingham’s promotion dream alive — and to ensure he remains the man trusted to deliver it.
