Bayern Munich make another strange claim about Newcastle star Nick Woltemade
Germany international Nick Woltemade has quickly become a fan favourite at Newcastle United following an explosive start to life in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old forward has made an immediate impact since completing his £69 million move from Stuttgart to St James’ Park in late August, netting five goals in his first nine appearances under Eddie Howe. Woltemade announced himself in style by scoring the decisive goal on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers, before finding the net in three consecutive league fixtures against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
His impressive form has continued on the European and international stages. The former Stuttgart striker bagged his first-ever Champions League goal in a 4–0 win at Union Saint-Gilloise and soon followed that up by scoring his maiden senior goal for Germany in a World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland. His rapid rise has not only earned him cult hero status among Newcastle supporters but also widespread admiration within the dressing room, as the Magpies’ record signing continues to go from strength to strength.
However, despite his bright start on Tyneside, Bayern Munich have once again caused a stir with new comments about their failed pursuit of the striker. According to Fussball Transfers, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has claimed that Woltemade was desperate to join the German champions before his move to Newcastle, but Stuttgart refused to sanction the deal.
Eberl said:
“Nick Woltemade repeatedly confirmed to us that he absolutely wanted to join FC Bayern, but VfB Stuttgart were not willing to accept our offer. That’s their right as long as the player is under contract. Nick remains a fantastic player and a great person, but he’s a different profile to someone like Florian Wirtz. In the end, we chose to stick to our financial limits.”
These remarks come only weeks after Bayern legend and current board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge mocked Newcastle’s record-breaking move for the German forward, calling the Premier League side “idiots” for meeting Stuttgart’s asking price.
Speaking to SportBild, Rummenigge said:
“When the story about Woltemade and Stuttgart’s demands came up, I told Uli [Hoeneß], Herbert Hainer, Jan Dreesen, and Max Eberl — we’re reaching a level that’s just not acceptable anymore. We can’t meet every demand to please people, especially those at Stuttgart. I can only congratulate Stuttgart for finding — and I’ll say this in quotes — an ‘idiot’ who paid that amount of money. We certainly wouldn’t have done that in Munich.”
Despite the repeated digs from Bayern’s hierarchy, Newcastle United remain focused on helping their record signing continue his remarkable run of form. Inside the club, there’s growing belief that Woltemade could become one of the Premier League’s standout forwards as he continues to adapt to English football.
