BREAKING: Detroit Lions obtains a former Pro Bowl player for $40 million thanks to the Lions’ free-agent appeal.

The defence of the Detroit Lions suffered during the team’s painful divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders. The unit gave up forty-eight points and four hundred eighty-one total yards to Jayden Daniels and the powerful offence of the Commanders.

Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, was able to get a position as the head coach of the New York Jets after the team’s defence had a strong regular season. This was despite the fact that the defence underperformed during the playoff game against Washington.

The secondary, and particularly the cornerbacks room, was one of the position groups that made significant progress in 2024 in comparison to the previous year, 2023. Terrion Arnold, a first-round choice who was a rookie for the Lions, started 15 games at cornerback for the team this season and demonstrated a great deal of promise. When Detroit was defeated by the Buffalo Bills in Week 15, Carlton Davis suffered a fracture to his jaw, which prevented him from continuing to serve as the team’s CB1 for the majority of the season.

It is questionable whether Davis will remain with the Lions after the 2024 season because he will be an unrestricted free agent during this offseason. Davis had a strong performance in 2024.

According to Jaren Kawada of Clutch Points, if Detroit is unable to keep Davis within the organisation during this offseason, general manager Brad Holmes should consider signing cornerback Charvarius Ward from the San Francisco 49ers in the free agency of 2025.

Not only did Ward have a difficult year in 2024, but he also had to deal with an inconceivable amount of personal challenges with the untimely death of his daughter.

Even though Ward, who is 28 years old, appeared to be out of sorts this season, he is still considered to be one of the best cornerbacks in football. His talents were put on full display during the 2023 season, when he made five interceptions, was selected for the Pro Bowl and the second team of All-Pro, and allowed only a 54.5% completion rate on 101 targets.

According to Over the Cap, the Lions are expected to have approximately $57 million in cap space during this offseason. This amount of money should be sufficient to accommodate the signing of Ward as well as the fulfilment of other roster requirements.

The former undrafted free agent is expected to secure a three-year contract worth $43.5 million, with $25 million guaranteed on the open market, according to projections made by Pro Football Focus.

The loss of Davis through free agency would not be ideal; but, replacing the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer with Charavarius Ward, who was a top cornerback just two seasons ago and has a great lot of experience in the playoffs, would be a smart decision on the part of Brad Holmes.
