The Detroit Lions are currently one of the most prominent teams in the NFL, and there is a valid explanation for this. Of course, the most significant change is that the Lions are one of the few teams in the NFL to have lost two key staff members simultaneously: offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, as well as some assistant coaches, following the Lions’ successful 2024 season.
Dan Campbell has a completely new roster of coaches, as Aaron Glenn is with the New York Jets and Johnson moved to the Chicago Bears.
Therefore, Detroit is being closely monitored to determine the extent to which they can function without these critical players. The Lions are currently expected to make a significant move before September, and it is associated with their quarterback room.
A New Quarterback Room for the Detroit Lions
Chris Schad urges the Lions to trade for a new reserve quarterback in exchange for Jared Goff in a Sunday, June 22, article for FanSided’s Detroit Jock City.
He stated, “Goff is firmly established as Detroit’s franchise quarterback; however, 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker did not make any significant progress in his sophomore year.” “The Lions also signed Kyle Allen to serve as a competitor; however, he has been inconsistent when called upon, maintaining an 82.3 passer rating and a 7-12 record as a starter over the course of his seven-year career.”
He suggests that the Lions consider trading for Aidan O’Connell of the Las Vegas Raiders. Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders selected O’Connell in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Schad observes that “his tenure continued during Antonio Pierce’s sole season as head coach, and he was afforded numerous opportunities to start in both seasons.”
The Raiders are currently under the leadership of new head coach Pete Carroll, which may present an opportunity for a trade. “It may appear straightforward, but Detroit should be on the lookout for a quarterback who can make the appropriate decision at the appropriate time,” Schad asserts. He further states that if Hooker and Allen are unable to capitalise on “elite weapons such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jameson Williams,” it may be worthwhile to forfeit the late-round pick in order to bring O’Connell to Detroit.
This would be a surprising move, as O’Connell is not a name that has been discussed much in relation to his potential relocation to Detroit.
Michael Bohlin also recommends that the Lions obtain a new second quarter in an article published on Saturday, June 21, in the same publication. In the article, he elucidates that, despite the fact that Goff is undoubtedly one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, the situation behind him on the depth chart is significantly more uncertain. The only other options on the roster are Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen, and, to be honest, neither has the track record to convince fans that they would be able to step in and maintain the Lions’ offence with the same level of precision as Goff.
Carson Wentz, a former All-Pro, is his selection. “The presence of a dependable veteran who has demonstrated the capacity to effectively manage an offence throughout his career would alleviate any apprehensions,” he observes.
Bohlin also makes the valid point that Wentz would not participate unless Goff was injured. Consequently, “it is more logical to rely on him than to introduce a young quarterback who lacks experience in high-pressure situations.” I concur with this sentiment on numerous levels.
