After losing Jamarco Jones for the season, the Detroit Lions are quickly adding to their offensive line backup. His agent says that the team is adding Devin Cochran, a big tackle who could help keep things stable in the middle.
Why the move had to happen
Dan Campbell revealed on Monday that Jamarco Jones will miss the whole year because he hurt his ankle in practice. Jones was already a surprise addition to the team, beating out Dan Skipper, but his injury made Detroit’s tackle position weak going into Week 2.
Cochran is a developing player with a lot of size and potential who could help the Lions right away.
What is Devin Cochran?
Cochran is a huge man. He is 6 feet 7 inches tall and 330 pounds. He joins Giovanni Manu as another giant up front for Detroit.
Cochran wasn’t picked in the 2022 draft, but he did sign with the Cincinnati Bengals and spent his first season on the practice team. He missed the 2023 season because of a knee injury, but the NFL has kept an eye on him because of his size and raw promise.
In terms of the roster, what it means
At this point, it’s not clear if Cochran will be making the 53-man roster or the practice squad. As of last weekend, running back Jacob Saylors was promoted, leaving one spot on the practice team open. If Cochran makes it to the 53-man squad, someone else will have to be moved to make room for him.
In any case, it’s clear that Detroit is adding to its strength at a very important time. Having reliable players in the trenches is very important for keeping the run game going and protecting Jared Goff. Cochran may not be a well-known name, but his addition will help the Lions’ offensive line stay steady.
