In order for Dan Campbell’s team to contend for a championship in 2025, the Detroit Lions will require their secondary to improve further. While the unit was strong in 2024, it will need to excel even further.
Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, Detroit’s safety starters, will be returning, but the cornerback room will be altered. The team was able to replace Carlton Davis with D.J. Reed, who will serve as the starting boundary corner opposite Terrion Arnold, after he was traded to the New England Patriots. The starting nickel position will be contested by Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Amik Robertson.
Despite the fact that the Lions have experienced some changes in the cornerback group, James Dator of SB Nation is of the opinion that Detroit should further strengthen the position by signing recently dismissed free-agent corner Jaire Alexander.
Dator wrote, “Detroit is in a very favorable position to sign Alexander to a high-incentive deal. This would provide them with a ludicrous DB room, featuring Terrion Arnold, D.J. Reed, and Jaire Alexander. Additionally, it would be a serious middle finger to the Packers by signing one of their best defensive players.”
On Monday, the Green Bay Packers terminated Alexander, a veteran cornerback who had appeared in only 14 games over the past two years. The Packers determined that his $84 million contract was not worth maintaining on the roster.
The 28-year-old is undeniably a game-changer on the field, despite his recent struggles with heath. Alexander’s inclusion as a quality depth player behind Arnold and Reed would be a prudent decision by general manager Brad Holmes, although the Lions do not necessarily require him.
Alexander’s final season of complete health in 2022 resulted in five interceptions, 14 passes defended, and a 66.2 passer rating when targeted. He also received a Pro Bowl and a second-team All-Pro mention for his performance that year, demonstrating his ability to remain a high-level starting corner.
Detroit would significantly benefit from signing Alexander to a team-friendly contract to fill a critical depth role in the secondary. Nevertheless, it is improbable that the Lions will secure the services of the two-time Pro Bowler, as he is expected to receive a guaranteed starting role and a higher salary from other teams.
