The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel was the subject of a phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was confirmed by Trump.
“President Putin contacted me this morning to extend a warm birthday greeting, but his primary objective was to discuss Iran, a nation with which he is intimately familiar,” Trump stated in a post on the social media platform Truth Social. “We engaged in a lengthy conversation.” There was significantly less time allocated to discussing Russia/Ukraine; however, that will be addressed in the upcoming week.
Trump stated that his conversation with Putin lasted approximately one hour, and they both agreed that the conflict between Iran and Israel should be resolved. “He also stated that Putin’s conflict with Ukraine should be resolved.”
“He is engaged in the planned prisoner swaps—a significant number of prisoners from both sides are being exchanged immediately,” Trump stated of Putin.
In the early hours of June 13, Israel conducted a preemptive strike on numerous sites in Iran, resulting in the destruction of critical components of the nuclear program and the deaths of numerous members of the regime’s leadership, including Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, the chief commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), stated on the evening of the attack, “We have no alternative.” “We are confronted with an existential and imminent threat.” We are unable to permit the Iranian regime to acquire a nuclear weapon that would pose a threat to the world and Israel.
The retaliatory attack against Iran was initiated by the strike later that day, and both parties have indicated that the exchange of fire will persist for several days.
The Kremlin has verified that Putin and Trump engaged in a 50-minute conversation during which Putin reiterated his previous statements condemning Israel’s preemptive attack on Iran.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov informed reporters that Vladimir Putin condemned Israel’s military operation against Iran and expressed grave concern about the potential escalation of the conflict, which would have unpredictable repercussions for the entire Middle East. Trump also described the escalating situation as “very alarming.”
Ushakov also stated that the two leaders did not exclude the possibility of resuming negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The subsequent round of negotiations with Iran was scheduled to commence in Oman on June 15, but it was postponed.
“The Russian president recalled that our side had proposed concrete steps to find mutually-acceptable agreements during talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives about the Iranian nuclear program prior to the current rise in tensions,” Ushakov stated.
“Russia’s principled approach and interest in a resolution remain unaltered, and, as Vladimir Putin stated, we will continue to act in accordance with this.”
The Kremlin also verified that Trump reiterated his intention to “achieve the quickest possible resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.”
Ushakov also stated that both Trump and Putin expressed satisfaction with their personal relationships, which have enabled them to communicate in a business-like manner in order to address bilateral or international issues, regardless of their complexity.
Putin informed Trump, as reported by a Russian state news agency, that Russia was prepared to continue negotiations with the Ukrainians after June 22.
