It has been stated that NB.1.8.1 is the cause of the outbreaks in China. Recently, the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledged that the COVID-19 infection rates in China reached their highest level since July 2023.

During this time, the Chinese media has reported an increase in the number of unexpected deaths that have occurred among the young elites of the country. These individuals include academics, scholars, police officers, and online influencers. Many of them were in their 30s or 40s at the time. In the vast majority of cases, there was no indication of the cause of death.
