BREAKING NEWS: Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham’s comments regarding the Premier League probe and the 115 FFP charges against Manchester City

There has been a lot of criticism from the mayor of Greater Manchester about how the Premier League has treated Everton and Nottingham Forest this season.

Andy Burnham has promised to help the Premier League treat Manchester City in a “fair and consistent” way. After a review in 2018, the English Premier League charged its champions with 115 alleged financial breach in February.

There have been claims that the club didn’t give correct financial information and didn’t help with investigations that lasted nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. Manchester City says they did nothing wrong, and the case will be heard by a separate panel later this year.

In the meantime, the Premier League has taken away points from Everton and Nottingham Forest for breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR). They have been fined eight points so far this season, but two of those points are being appealed right now.

Four points have been taken away from Forest. Because of this, Sean Dyche and Nuno Espirito Santo are both in a fight to stay up, as they are only two points and one point away from the relegation zone, respectively. Burnham, who was born in Liverpool and has always supported Everton, has been a loud critic of how the Premier League is run.

The Manchester Evening News has looked at everything the Greater Manchester Mayor has said about the triple winners’ case as the season comes to a close.

“I will back Manchester City.”
This week, Burnham told the Manchester Evening News, “So obviously it’s not all in the public domain.” On the other hand, I will definitely help Manchester City get fair, consistent, and clear care. I think that’s the problem: the Premier League needs to convince everyone that it will be done in a fair and consistent way.

“Like I said, we don’t know yet because there isn’t much information out there, but I will defend both Manchester clubs and both Premier League clubs as best I can when they need it.” By nature, that’s what I will do because I like to question when things have been done unfairly or wrongly.

“They ruined the season”
When Burnham talked to Mark Chapman on The Sports Agents show in March, he said, “I feel so frustrated about it.” They messed up this season, the next-to-last season at Goodison Park. It doesn’t seem right to me that this grand old ground is always filled with protests, frustrations, and anger.

“But not just to us. Look at the table’s bottom.” There is confusion about where they are and what is going on. There is no way to know what the next reduction will be. And take a look at the process they have Forest and us going through right now.

“Did they use the formula they sent to the first commission that looked at Everton and the commission that looked at Forest?” I’m not sure how to answer that. Are they going to use the same plan for Everton?

It’s hard to tell what the rules are, so I don’t think it’s even a system. Will Everton and Forest be the only clubs ever to be charged under this?”

“And this is the point: I think they took this action against Everton and targeted us in this way to try and show that they could regulate to fight the idea of a government regulator.”

“I believe they have shown they cannot control, not the other way around. This is the position we’re in because they’ve shown they can’t do it fairly, openly, and freely.

Chiefs of the Premier League get slammed… again!
In February, Burnham talked about how the Premier League treated Everton and said, “The Premier League has shown that they can’t properly regulate football by the way they’ve treated Everton Football Club.” After everything that has gone wrong in the past few weeks, we need a strong, independent statutory regulator for sport.
