Russell Martin has been dismissed as Rangers head coach after just 17 games in charge, with the club stating that “although every transition takes time, the results have fallen short of expectations.”
The 39-year-old’s final game came in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Falkirk, after which he required a police escort from the stadium as angry fans attempted to block the team bus.
Martin had been under growing pressure from supporters at Ibrox following a disappointing start to the campaign. Rangers struggled to find form, only recording their first Scottish Premiership win in late September and suffering a humiliating 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs in August.
As the league pauses for its second international break, Rangers sit eighth in the Premiership, 11 points adrift of leaders Hearts.
Appointed in June on a three-year deal by the club’s new American ownership group, Martin managed just one win in seven league outings—drawing five—and secured only five victories across all competitions.
Assistant manager Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson have also left their roles.
In a statement, the club said: “Russell and his staff have given their all during their time here. We are grateful for their commitment and wish them every success in the future. Further announcements will be made in due course.”
