Robert Prevost of the United States has been named the new pope, the new head of the Catholic church.
On May 8, 2025, the cardinals concluded the conclave in The Vatican, and Pope Robert Francis Prevost, the newly elected Pope, made his inaugural appearance on the main central loggia balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican announced on Thursday that Robert Francis Prevost was elected the first pontiff from the United States. He assumes the papal name Leo XIV and becomes the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church. He was a moderate who was close to Pope Francis and spent years as a missionary in Peru.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who assumed the name Pope Leo XIV, has been elected the 267th Pope by the Cardinals assembled in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. It is a historic moment for the Vatican to have its first American pontiff. Pope Francis is succeeded by him.
