Championship clubs Ipswich Town and Stoke City are both monitoring Lugano defender Antonios Papadopoulosahead of the January transfer window.
Papadopoulos has become a key figure for Lugano in both domestic and European competitions since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in June last year. Although he never fully broke into Dortmund’s senior squad—making only eight first-team appearances between 2021 and 2024—he has rebuilt his career in Switzerland.
Both Ipswich and Stoke are now scouting him closely as the winter market approaches.
The Greek defender has experience across all three major European tournaments. He featured twice in the Champions League with Dortmund and has appeared in both the Europa League and Conference League for Lugano.
Primarily a centre-back, Papadopoulos can also slot into defensive midfield, a versatility that is believed to be a major factor behind the growing interest from English clubs.
Ipswich, relegated from the Premier League last season, sit ninth in the Championship after an up-and-down start. Stoke, on the other hand, are outperforming expectations under Mark Robins and currently occupy fourth place.
A move to either side would see Papadopoulos join a team chasing promotion, and with the Swiss Super League nearing its winter break, a January transfer is looking increasingly possible.
The 26-year-old has produced two goals in 17 appearances this season and his impressive form could pave the way for a switch to English football in the new year.
