This summer, Newcastle United has once again identified Anthony Elanga as a potential target.
The Nottingham Forest player was rumored to be on the verge of a transfer to St James’ Park last summer. However, the Magpies were unable to pursue the transfer and satisfy Forest’s valuation of the winger due to financial constraints imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. During an outstanding campaign for the Tricky Trees, Elanga would score six times and assist on an additional 12 goals.
Newcastle United have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Elanga this summer after failing to secure Bryan Mbeumo’s signature. The Cameroon international is rumored to be on his way to Old Trafford, according to the Mail Online. Newcastle will probably be required to pay a sum exceeding £50 million to secure the 23-year-old this summer, following their unsuccessful attempt to secure him for approximately £40 million last summer.
Newcastle United has been monitoring Elanga for some time and believes that he has the potential to immediately contribute to their Premier League team, while also providing versatility in their front line. Last season, the former Manchester United player scored an extraordinary solitary goal against the Red Devils. He ran the entire length of the City Ground pitch before directing the ball into the net.
Many Newcastle United fans are salivating at the thought of Elanga achieving a similar feat at the Gallowgate End, as evidenced by the replays of that goal. However, securing a transfer for the Swedish international will not be an easy task.
Nottingham Forest’s perspective regarding the transfer of Anthony Elanga
Forest is not obligated to sell Elanga this summer, despite the fact that Newcastle has the ability to offer him Champions League football. Elanga’s present contract at the City Ground expires in three years, and he will not be required to sell players in order to comply with PSR.
Elanga relocated from Old Trafford to the Trent Riverbanks for £15 million in 2023, resulting in a substantial profit for Forest if they decide to sell him this summer. In contrast, the Magpies will likely be required to offer a fee that is comparable to their club-record purchase in order to persuade Forest to sell.
The Magpies have only invested more than £50m on a single player twice, in 2023 and 2022, when they spent £55m and £63m to sign Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak, respectively. Before it is temporarily closed for a mere week, the summer transfer window will remain open for only three more days.
Once the window reopens on June 16, clubs will be permitted to sign players once more. Newcastle United will have until 7 p.m. on Monday, September 1st, to finalize all of their transfer business.
