Anthony Gordon will not be present for Newcastle United’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle United, is confronted with a number of selection decisions in anticipation of the match against Wolves at St James’ Park on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Anthony Gordon’s suspension will prevent the Magpies from obtaining their inaugural victory of the new season. Gordon was issued a straight red card during the match against Liverpool and consequently was unable to participate in the subsequent match against Leeds United.
However, the 24-year-old will be available for the midweek Champions League match against Barcelona at St James’ Park, as red card suspensions do not transfer over into Europe. Additionally, he will be absent from the trip to AFC Bournemouth this weekend and next weekend.
In Gordon’s absence, Howe will be confronted with a significant decision regarding the starting lineup for his team on Saturday, both on the left flank and in the attacking position. Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, forwards from VfB Stuttgart and Brentford, respectively, have been added to Newcastle’s squad since their most recent match.
The players have had limited training time with Howe and his coaching staff in preparation for Saturday’s match, as they have been away with their national teams during the international break.
Following recent injury concerns, Newcastle will also be anticipating the return of Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton to the roster. Ramsey and Joelinton were excluded from their most recent matches against Liverpool and Leeds, respectively. However, they have since resumed training in anticipation of their match against Wolves on Saturday.
Regulations for Premier League suspensions
Newcastle are currently experiencing the consequences of the Premier League’s suspension regulations in Gordon’s absence; however, they are fortunate to have no other players who are at risk of suspension in the upcoming weeks.
No player has been issued more than one booking in Newcastle’s initial three Premier League matches. Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, Joelinton, and Nick Pope have each received one yellow card.
According to Premier League regulations, players who accrue five bookings within the first 19 matches of the season are required to serve a one-match suspension. The aforementioned players must avoid four bookings in 16 games, while the remainder of the squad must avoid five bookings during the same period.
Joelinton, in particular, will be trying to avoid suspension, as he has missed four matches over the past three seasons as a result of yellow card suspensions, which is the most of any player.
As of now, Newcastle’s 19th match of the league season is scheduled to take place on December 30, against Burnley. However, fixtures are subject to change.
Furthermore, any participant who accumulates 10 bookings within the first 32 matches is required to serve a two-match ban.
After the 10th booking, the 32-game threshold is reached. Any player who accumulates 15 bookings throughout the season is issued a three-match suspension. No player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign to date.
Domestic suspensions are not transferred to European competitions, as previously stated. However, red card suspensions are enforced in all domestic cup competitions.
Gordon’s red card against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup caused him to miss the Carabao Cup final and two Premier League matches. This is the reason.
However, yellow card suspensions are only applicable to the competition in which they are received. Therefore, a player who has been suspended for a match in the Premier League due to five infractions must serve the suspension in a league match.
