Breaking news: There is an allegation of “conspiracy to impede an officer” against the leader of the SEIU for opposing an ICE raid

David Huerta is facing federal charges for interfering with the immigration enforcement operation that is being carried out by the Trump administration.

A labor leader from California named David Huerta, who is 58 years old, was freed from federal jail on Monday on a bond of $50,000. He was charged with “conspiracy to impede an officer.”

A demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took place in Los Angeles on Friday, and Huerta, the president of Service Employees International Union California (SEIU), was taken into custody.

After Huerta was released from detention, he was spotted holding shoes and wearing socks at the same time. In his statement to the media, he stated that he had no intention of being detained and that the best way to bring about change is via nonviolence.

Huerta is quoted as saying in Spanish, “This fight is ours, it’s our community’s, but it belongs to everyone,” as reported by the Associated Press. “We all have to fight for them.”

A special agent for Homeland Security Investigations, which is a part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, wrote in a federal court filing that was obtained by the Associated Press that Huerta was arrested while law enforcement officers were executing a federal search warrant at a business in Los Angeles that was suspected of hiring illegal immigrants and falsifying employment papers.

According to its website, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) represents 750,000 members in 17 local unions located in 58 counties. The members of the organization include “nurses, healthcare workers, janitors, social workers, security officers, in-home caregivers, school and university employees, court workers, and city, county and state employees.”

April Verrett, the President of SEIU International, stated on Monday that the labor union is “relieved” that Huerta is free. However, she emphasized that his detention simply brought attention to a more significant problem.

“There are still thousands of workers who are being held against their will and isolated from their families. At this current moment, extremely militarized armed forces are terrorizing neighborhoods that are comprised of immigrants. A hazardous escalation taken by the Trump administration to target individuals who disagree with them is the demand for the National Guard to be called in. There is a danger to our democratic system. According to what she said in a statement, “the federal government should never be used as a weapon against people who disagree with them.”

“The United States of America is a nation of immigrants. Verrett went on to say that immigrants are indispensable to our society since they are responsible for providing food for our country, taking care of our elderly, cleaning our workplaces, and constructing our homes. People who immigrate to the United States are scientists, educators, and academics. Our neighbors, coworkers, and family members are all included in this group. In addition to requiring that their constitutional rights be protected, they are deserving of our respect.
