Even though its clubs voted against the suggestion at Thursday’s Annual General Meeting, the Premier League will not be abandoning the use of video assistant referee technology.

After a season filled with controversy, Wolves proposed the notion of eliminating video assistant referee equipment, and today, teams in the Premier League voted on whether or not to do away with it.

The proposal to drop the system was proposed by Wolves following a year of controversial choices; nevertheless, it is understood that no other club, including Manchester United and Man City, supported them in their effort, with a majority vote of 19-1 being approved in favor of the motion.

A statement issued by the Premier League said as follows: “Premier League clubs today voted in favor of continuing to operate video assistant referees in the Premier League.” It was agreed upon that changes should be made for the good of the game and the fans, despite the fact that VAR results in more accurate decision-making.

“As part of the comprehensive discussions that took place at the Annual General Meeting, it was agreed upon that the Premier League, the Premier League, and clubs all have important roles to play in relation to the enhancement of the system and its reputation,” the statement continued.

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the video assistant referee (VAR), an emphasis was placed on six critical issues during discussions with clubs:

1) Ensuring that the threshold for video assistant referee involvement is kept at a high level in order to provide greater uniformity and fewer disruptions to the flow of the game.

reducing the amount of time that the game is delayed, particularly through the implementation of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) and the maintenance of a high threshold for the intervention of the video assistant referee.

“The Premier League and PGMOL will continue to lobby IFAB to allow greater flexibility in the Laws of the Game to allow live video and audio broadcast during VAR reviews.”

The third goal is to enhance the fan experience by reducing the amount of time that the game is delayed, implementing in-stadium announcements from referees following a change of judgment made by the video assistant referee, and, whenever it is feasible, enhancing the availability of big screen replays to incorporate all VAR interventions.

“4) Collaborating with PGMOL to develop a more comprehensive VAR training program in order to enhance consistency. This program will place an emphasis on the efficient completion of processes while maintaining accuracy.

“The technology will provide high-quality broadcast graphics, which will ensure that fans have a better experience both inside the stadium and on the broadcast. It will also allow a quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, which will be based on optical player tracking.

“5) Increasing the level of transparency and communication surrounding the video assistant referee (VAR), including expanding communications from the Premier League Match Centre and through broadcast content such as Match Officials Mic’d Up in particular.

In addition, the delivery of a communication campaign for fans and stakeholders on the video assistant referee (VAR), which will aim to further define the role of the VAR in the game to participants and supporters.

Following this, the statement said, “It was confirmed in April that Semi-Automated Offside Technology will be introduced in the autumn of 2024.”
