Reports suggest that one of Sheffield Wednesday’s leading takeover candidates has visited Hillsborough as opening bids for the club draw closer.
Although the Owls are not out of trouble just yet, optimism is growing following the end of Dejphon Chansiri’s turbulent ownership. Wednesday entered administration and were hit with a 12-point deduction, leaving their Championship survival hopes hanging by a thread. However, since Chansiri’s departure, fans have rallied behind the club — flooding the shop and packing Hillsborough for the 1-1 draw with Norwich City.
Administrator Kris Wigfield thanked supporters earlier this week and confirmed that several potential buyers, including groups fronted by John McEvoy and former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, have shown serious interest with proof of funds around £50 million.
A soft deadline of November 21 has been set for initial bids. Wigfield revealed that one bidder was shown around Hillsborough and the club’s training ground on Thursday, with two or three more visits lined up for next week.
“It’s now at the stage where we’re asking the key questions to determine who’s serious about buying the club,” Wigfield said. Despite the 12-point penalty, there is a renewed sense of hope at Wednesday as the search for new ownership gathers pace.
