On Tuesday morning, a woman who is purported to be the daughter of a French cryptocurrency executive narrowly evaded being abducted in Paris.
The woman, who was out walking with her companion and their young child, was attacked on a street in Paris’ 11th arrondissement shortly after 8 a.m., according to Le Parisien newspaper.
According to the French media, her companion was able to repel the masked attackers who were attempting to coerce the woman into a white van.
The couple was also assisted by passersby in a video of the attack that was shared online.
One of them retrieved a gun that had been dropped by an assailant and pointed it at them, while another hurled a red fire extinguisher in the direction of the masked men.
In the aftermath of their unsuccessful kidnapping attempt, the perpetrators fled by vehicle.
A series of abductions
In recent months, a growing number of cryptocurrency leaders and their families have either escaped kidnapping attempts or been kidnapped in France and Europe.
The father of a cryptocurrency boss was abducted while walking his dog in Paris’ 14th arrondissement in early May, and he was held captive for three days.
According to Franceinfo, his kidnappers sent a video of his mutilated digit to his son and demanded a multi-million euro ransom in exchange for his release.
In January, David Balland, the 36-year-old co-founder of the French crypto company Ledger, and his companion were abducted from their residence in the small commune of Méreau, which is situated in central-northern France.
Eric Larchevêque, the co-founder of Ledger, issued an alert following the receipt of a video depicting Balland’s severed digit, which was accompanied by a cryptocurrency ransom demand.
Additionally, recent kidnapping attempts have been reported against cryptocurrency figures and their relatives in Belgium and Spain.
