Miodrag Pivas was an under-the-radar acquisition for Newcastle United during the summer. In July, the Serbian club FK Jedinstvo Ub issued a five-year professional contract to the 19-year-old defender. Pivas, a youthful player who was highly regarded and capable of playing at centre-back or defensive midfield, had been compared to Serbian footballing icon Nemanja Vidic upon his arrival.

Nevertheless, his relocation to Newcastle has been a source of frustration thus far, as he has been unable to train with the first team or under-21s as a result of work permit complications.

The Gazette contacted the club to inquire about Pivas’ predicament, and they were informed that the teenager would be on loan at Dutch club Willem II. However, Pivas encountered work permit complications once more following his signing with Willem II for the 2024-25 season. Before his loan was officially verified on September 2, he arrived in Tilburg in late August.

Before making his debut in a 2-0 loss to PSV Eindhoven, Pivas was required to sit out two matches for Willem. He entered the game as a late substitute. Subsequently, he observed the 1-0 victory at Almare City from the sideline last week. The difficulty in obtaining a work permit for Pivas was partially due to the fact that Serbia is not a member of the European Union, which means that distinct regulations apply to the authorization of nationals from that country to work in the Netherlands. In accordance with his loan agreement, Pivas was required to apply for a “Combined Permit for Residence and Work” in order to labor in the country for a period exceeding three months.

Pivas was unable to represent Willem in a capacity without the work permit, which meant that he was unable to train individually at the club’s training facility.

Consequently, Pivas returned to Serbia to train with his former club, Jedinstvo, in order to preserve his physical endurance.

He also had the opportunity to report to the Dutch embassy in Belgrade to finalize the formalities while his work permit was being processed.

was ultimately permitted to participate in training and matches more than two weeks after registering with the organization.

After overcoming his initial obstacle, Pivas must now establish himself as a member of the Willem starting lineup.
