Booker, who was elected as the fourth Black senator by the people, went over that limit by a long way. His voice was still strong but emotional when he reached 25 hours and five minutes.

He later told MSNBC, “Strom Thurmond’s record always… really irked me.”

“That person who gave the longest speech on our great Senate floor was trying to keep people like me from being in the Senate.”

As the time to break the record got closer, the public galleries of the Senate room slowly filled up with more Democratic lawmakers. Most Republicans, however, stayed away.

“Now is a moral time.” It’s not left or right. “Right or wrong,” Booker said as he ended.

He also quoted his mentor, civil rights leader John Lewis, who told activists to get into “good trouble.” Finally, he said, “Madam President, I yield the floor.”

Booker, who was a candidate for president before, took over the chamber at 7 p.m. (2300 GMT) Monday and left at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday.

He was angry about Trump’s extreme policies for cutting costs, which have led his richest assistant, Elon Musk, to cut whole government programs without getting permission from Congress.

The senator said that Trump’s bold takeover of more and more executive power was a threat to democracy in the US.

“Americans from all walks of life are going through unneeded hardships.” “And institutions that are unique to America, that are important, and that are special to our country are being carelessly, and I would even say unconstitutionally, attacked, and even broken,” Booker said.

He also said that he was “tired and a little hoarse” in a message sent by his office.

Democrats have been in the minority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, making it hard for them to stop Trump from cutting back on government, increasing deportations, and tearing up many of the country’s political rules.

Sen. Raphael Warnock told Booker on the floor, “I just want to thank you for standing watch for this country all night.”

Booker spent a lot of his speech criticising Trump’s policies. To pass the time, he read poetry, talked about sports, and took questions from his peers.

“Show your love for your neighbour and for this country. He said, “Stop them from what they’re trying to do.”

When he broke the record, the 55-year-old from New Jersey found a funny moment.
