Brendan Rodgers has disclosed the reason for Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s failure to make his Celtic debut, despite his arrival at the club nearly three weeks ago.
Rodgers was forthright when queried about the young defender’s absence following Celtic’s 3-0 victory over Livingston at Celtic Park. The manager expressed his admiration for Simpson-Pusey’s aptitude, but emphasized that the primary objective at this time is to prepare him physically for the rigors of first-team football.
The centre-back, who joined Celtic after a successful season in Man City’s academy, did not participate in any preseason football. Rodgers is adopting a more enduring perspective on the player’s development, as the squad is currently engaged in both domestic and European competition.
Rodgers disclosed that Simpson-Pusey intends to utilize the forthcoming weeks to adjust to the training regimen in anticipation of his potential participation following the international break in September.
He stated on the Celtic FC YouTube channel, “He is not currently included in the squad.” He has emerged as a gifted individual.
“The primary objective of the initial phase of the season was to acclimate him to the way we would be working, as he has not played any minutes during the preseason and is returning from training with a group of players. Consequently, he is not prepared.”
“However, we are monitoring him and anticipate that he will be able to make a significant impact following the international break. However, it is ultimately his decision.”
“Nevertheless, he is a gifted individual.”
Rodgers’ statements indicate that he is adopting a patient approach with a youthful player who possesses significant potential but is not yet match-ready. Rather than rushing him into games, Celtic are allowing Simpson-Pusey to adjust to the physicality and tempo of first-team football.
The defender relocated from Manchester City, where he served as the skipper of their U18 team and made a handful of senior appearances. Celtic promptly acted to secure his loan, recognizing his potential to become a critical asset in the future.
At present, the primary objective is to enhance his physical condition and facilitate his adjustment. He may be in contention for a position in the squad following the international break, provided that all goes according to plan. However, he must demonstrate his readiness during training.
Rodgers has left the door open for Simpson-Pusey to make an impact later in the campaign, and he is still one to keep a watch on as the season goes on.
