Bristol City Boss Struber Drops New Transfer Clue Connected to Middlesbrough FC

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber has suggested the club are considering a permanent move for defender Neto Borges following his positive impact since arriving on loan.

The Brazilian joined the Robins late in the summer window from Middlesbrough as Struber began shaping his squad after replacing Liam Manning, who guided the club to their first Championship play-off finish in 17 years last season.

Despite Struber’s pedigree at second-tier level and his recent role in FC Köln’s promotion back to the Bundesliga, the Austrian chose continuity over wholesale change upon arriving at Ashton Gate.

Borges’ deadline-day loan switch proved to be one of only six signings made under Struber, with just four additions strengthening the outfield squad. The full-back has since become a valuable figure during the opening months of the new regime.

City have remained firmly in the play-off conversation despite inconsistency caused by injuries and suspensions, currently sitting eighth in the table and just a point outside the top six with 21 matches remaining. Early January signings Ranel Young and Sam Morsy have already arrived, and the club are now exploring ways to strengthen further.

Borges’ parent club Middlesbrough remain direct rivals in the promotion race, though their recent form has dipped following a promising start under new manager Kim Hellberg. The defender had found himself down the pecking order on Teesside earlier in the season, which opened the door for his temporary move to Bristol City.

Since then, the 29-year-old has impressed with his adaptability, featuring at left-back, centre-back and in midfield during City’s injury-hit spell. His consistency and influence have not gone unnoticed, and Struber has now confirmed discussions could take place regarding a permanent deal.

“Of course it’s something we are thinking about,” Struber said. “What he’s shown in training, in matches and within the dressing room has been very positive. He’s been excellent, and I’m very happy with his performances and professionalism.

“He brings energy, personality and experience, and that Brazilian spirit has been great for the group.”

While no option to buy was included in the original loan agreement, City are now weighing up whether to push for a deal this window or revisit the situation in the summer.
