Switzerland tied Scotland in extra time at EURO 2024, and Schar played the whole game.

In their Group A match at EURO 2024, Switzerland and Scotland tied 1-1 on Wednesday night. Fabian Schar, a star player for Newcastle United, played over 70 minutes with a broken nose.

Schar played the whole game for the second straight game after Saturday’s 3-1 win over Hungary, but his night did not go as well as his first game in the tournament.

In the 13th minute, the 32-year-old’s night did not get off to the best of starts when he deflected Scott McTominay’s shot toward the goal past the grateful arms of Swiss goalie Yann Sommer and into the back of the net.

After that, Schar’s night got even worse when, in the 19th minute, he crashed into Celtic fullback Anthony Ralston while attempting to head the ball and broke his nose.

The Newcastle back played out the rest of the game, but it’s not clear yet if he will be able to play in Switzerland’s last group game against Germany. It has been reported by the Swiss news outlet SRF that Schar will have more tests before a decision is made about his fitness for Sunday’s game.

Schar’s accident made people think of Kylian Mbappe’s terrible injury from 48 hours before. The France star hit Austrian defender Kevin Danso in the shoulder while trying to win a shot, and his nose wound up being out of place.

Mbappe was taken to the hospital and treated for his broken nose. He did not have surgery right away, but it is still not clear if he will be able to play in France’s final group games against the Netherlands and Poland.

Right after the game, the Real Madrid forward made a joke on X by asking fans if they knew where he could get a mask to protect his face for France’s final games.

Schar’s Switzerland are currently second in Group A with four points after two games. They look like they will easily make it to the next round of EURO 2024, no matter how they do against Germany in their last group match on Sunday.
