Calls emerge for Danny Rohl to consider ending a Rangers player’s contract following his display versus Ferencvaros

Rangers travelled to Budapest for their Europa League match against Ferencvaros, but one player delivered a notably poor performance on the night.

The Scottish side arrived with only one point from their first five group games, as Danny Rohl has struggled to turn things around since taking charge in late October.

Bojan Miovski briefly lifted spirits when his superb overhead kick put Rangers ahead in the 27th minute, offering hope that their European campaign might be back on track.

Gassama struggles again

Supporters were optimistic when Djeidi Gassama joined permanently from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, but the 22-year-old winger has yet to produce consistent displays. He has managed just three goal contributions in 15 Premiership matches this season, and his form in Europe has been similarly disappointing.

Against Ferencvaros, Gassama again failed to make an impact. He lost his marker in the build-up to the Hungarian side’s first goal and offered little going forward, registering only eight completed passes and no successful dribbles.

Rangers were then hit with a setback right before the interval when Bence Otvos levelled deep into added time, and Barnabas Varga later struck the winner with 18 minutes remaining. The 2–1 defeat effectively ended Rangers’ hopes of reaching the Europa League play-off round. Gassama was replaced by Mikey Moore just before the hour mark and showed visible frustration as he left the pitch, though his recent form provided little justification to stay on.

Villarreal interest and uncertain future

Before the trip to Hungary, reports emerged that Villarreal are keen on Gassama, viewing him as the type of winger who suits their style. While he still has potential, Rohl may consider allowing him to leave in January after another ineffective display.

Fans have grown frustrated with his lack of end product and, more concerningly, a dip in work rate. Though he remains a young player with room to grow, he must raise his standards quickly to secure his future at Rangers.
