Following Scotland’s elimination from the game by Hungary, Celtic’s team will return from taking part in EURO 2024.

On a night when Steve Clarke’s team needed to win to pretty much lock up a spot in the next round, the Tartan Army failed in both play and outcome.

Hungary was tough to beat on offense, and there wasn’t enough rhythm in the closing third. Marco Rossi’s team now has a chance to move on from Group A if things go their way elsewhere.

For Celtic, this means that Callum McGregor, Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor, and James Forrest will need some time to heal before they have to go back to Lennoxtown to do their club work.

McGregor talked about the poor night after the game, which will be hard for the national team to take.

McGregor isn’t afraid to speak out when things don’t go as planned, and the Celtic captain was honest about how shocked he was when Scotland was kicked out of EURO 2024.

“It’s a huge disappointment,” he told The Herald. Because everyone was so hopeful and excited, we thought this was the time we did it. Even though they tried their best, the football just wouldn’t drop where they wanted it to. It’s likely that was the case tonight.

“One point wasn’t enough for us; two points would have been too much for us to handle.” We were aware that we needed to win. You do everything you can, but it hits you back. That goal probably didn’t matter.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been there.” It keeps getting better, and sometimes you have to be let down to understand the level. There was no doubt in our minds that we could finish the job. We knew Hungary would make it hard, and they did. They found the defining moment that we never quite did.

As always, McGregor keeps things in perspective, even though he has a personal stake in the matter. This is why he is such a great leader to have on and off the field.

To be honest, Scotland didn’t do enough to make the problem matter that night. They didn’t get enough chances, and a smarter side that knew how to pick the lock when it counted beat them.

Following their help for Scotland in Germany, McGregor and Ralston can be proud of their performance for Celtic.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. However, Celtic will now be back in the spotlight before pre-season, which is exciting.
