Celtic are closing in on a final call over their interest in Callum Wilson

Celtic have finally secured a recognised striker, though the search was far from straightforward.

The Hoops confirmed the loan signing of Tomas Cvancara ahead of this weekend’s clash with Hearts, easing one of their biggest concerns in the January transfer window. For a period, it appeared Callum Wilson could arrive to bolster the forward line for the remainder of the season, but those discussions ultimately fizzled out.

Callum Wilson to remain at West Ham

Much of the January speculation surrounding Wilson centred on the possibility of his West Ham contract being terminated early. However, that narrative has shifted dramatically.

After scoring the decisive goal for the Hammers in their Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur, the 33-year-old now looks set to stay put. According to Ben Jacobs, the England international will remain in East London as West Ham battle to secure their top-flight status.

That goal appears to have been a turning point, effectively ending any prospect of a mid-season exit. Although Celtic legend Frank McAvennie had urged the club to move for Wilson, the Hoops ultimately chose not to pursue a serious deal, despite the striker previously appearing destined to leave West Ham.

Do Celtic still need another striker?

With Cvancara now through the door, Celtic’s immediate need for another forward has significantly diminished.

While further reinforcements are still expected, attention can now shift to other areas of the squad. A centre-back remains a priority, while adding a right winger is also high on the agenda.

Other positions, including goalkeeper and central midfield, could also come under review, though any moves there may be pushed back until the summer transfer window.
