Celtic begin discussions with Champions League-winning boss

Celtic are continuing their internal search for a permanent manager ahead of the summer, with Martin O’Neill currently in charge on an interim basis until the end of the season.

O’Neill is in his second spell as caretaker boss. He initially stepped in following the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers, before Celtic opted for a bold move by appointing Wilfried Nancy from Major League Soccer. However, that experiment proved short-lived, with Nancy relieved of his duties after just eight matches, having won only twice. O’Neill was subsequently reinstated to steady the ship.

While the Northern Irishman could yet make a case to take the role permanently, expectations are that Celtic will explore alternative options. One familiar name has resurfaced: Kjetil Knutsen.

Knutsen continues to impress in Europe

Although not currently listed among the bookmakers’ favourites, reports suggest Celtic have opened discussions with the Bodø/Glimt manager about a potential summer move. It is claimed that initial contact has been made with the 57-year-old, who has earned widespread praise for his side’s performances in Europe.

Knutsen’s growing reputation has been built on remarkable continental runs. Bodø/Glimt stunned Inter Milan in the Champions League play-offs, securing a 5-2 aggregate victory after winning both at home and at the San Siro. The Norwegian club also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League last season, eventually falling to eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur.

Many predicted the Champions League would prove a step too far, yet Glimt have continued to defy expectations, adding notable victories over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to their résumé.

Speaking amid earlier speculation about the Celtic role, Knutsen insisted any future move would need to surpass what he currently has in Norway, stating that nothing is certain in football and any departure would have to be for something “more exciting” than Glimt.

A big summer decision looms

Knutsen now faces a pivotal choice. He may feel Bodø/Glimt provides the ideal platform to fulfil his ambitions, particularly given their continued European progress. Alternatively, he could view guiding the club deep into the Champions League as the peak of what can be achieved there, prompting consideration of a fresh challenge.

Former Bodø academy director Gregg Broughton has described Knutsen as an “absolute master” for his unwavering focus and ability to concentrate solely on the present — a mindset many credit for the club’s rapid rise.

Celtic are expected to monitor developments closely and maintain dialogue with Knutsen’s representatives as the season unfolds, especially if Bodø/Glimt continue to exceed expectations on Europe’s biggest stage.
