The Australian boss was without a doubt one of the most liked by Celtic fans, so the next hire was very important to keep the club stable and successful.

That’s why the Celtic fans were shocked when Rodgers was hired. We don’t need to talk about why because we all know.

But for the hiring to go through, Rodgers had to talk to Dermot Desmond and then Callum McGregor. But it looks like it was the talk with the Celtic captain that made Rodgers decide to go back to Paradise.

McGregor’s “honest” talk with Rodgers about Celtic
In a sneak peek of an interview that will air this Friday at 7pm on Sky Sports, McGregor was asked what he said to Rodgers in Spain that made the Celtic manager decide to come back.

McGregor told Sky Sports, “At first, I was just excited to see him again.” Since then, it had been there for a while. Once the boss called, though, I knew that he was interested. We talked for a while, and it was clear right away.

“He was getting to know some of the players and asking about how the club was doing and how things were going. Right away I got excited because I think it’s going to happen—he’s going to come back.”

There were mixed feelings among Celtic fans when the news of Brendan Rodgers’ return came out last summer.

Since Ange Postecolgou chose to follow his dream of playing in the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, the board of Celtic knew they had to make the right choice when they hired their next manager.

As I already said, I just tried to be honest about where I thought the club stood, how we could improve it, and where we could keep trying to move it forward, because I knew that was important for the manager as well.

“He wants to keep moving.” I learned that the first time he came here. Besides always wanting more, he was also trying to raise the bar in the club for everyone else.

Our goals for the club were clear, and I was excited about the chance to work with the boss again.

“I just told him the truth about where I thought we stood. We’re a young, exciting team that probably needed a little extra help to get where we want to be, and I thought the manager would be the best person to do that.”

That talk really paid off. The first season Brendan Rodgers was back at the club, they won both the league and the Scottish Cup.

Even though it wasn’t easy, the Hoops manager did a great job of keeping Celtic’s best players on long-term deals and keeping the team’s success going.

Matt O’Riley’s improvement has also been a huge plus. The Player of the Year for Celtic scored and set up important goals to help the club stay on top in Scotland.

But no matter how fans feel about Rodgers’ return now, Desmond’s choice to bring him back has paid off, both on and off the field, when the Champions League money hits Celtic’s bank account.
