Celtic legend Chris Sutton has a knack for riling up Rangers supporters — though, in fairness, they often make it rather easy for him.
It’s already been a chaotic and somewhat farcical season for the Ibrox side. After dismissing Russell Martin as manager, speculation quickly grew about a sensational Steven Gerrard return. However, despite reported meetings throughout the week and excitement among the Rangers faithful, multiple outlets have now confirmed that Gerrard has decided against rejoining the club.
From a Celtic point of view, it’s hard not to chuckle — Rangers truly are the gift that keeps on giving.
Celtic, meanwhile, have maintained their domestic dominance for nearly twenty years, narrowly missing out on a Treble last season. Rangers, in contrast, splashed the cash during the summer in hopes of closing the gap under Martin, only for their plans to backfire disastrously and leave them battling near the bottom of the table.
When the news broke about Gerrard’s snub, Sutton quickly took to social media to sum up the situation, writing: “He’s assessed the squad…” — a tongue-in-cheek remark about Gerrard’s decision.
While Rangers continue to chop and change managers without silverware, Celtic remain stable under Brendan Rodgers. Still, that could change next summer. Rodgers’ contract runs until 2026, but given the occasionally strained relationship between him and the board, many believe his departure is inevitable.
Former boss Ange Postecoglou, currently under pressure at Nottingham Forest after being dismissed by Tottenham earlier in the year, could even be a candidate to return. Much like Rodgers before him, Postecoglou would certainly be welcomed back to Celtic Park if the club’s current situation remains the same.
