People have said bad things about Scotland after they lost 5-1 to Germany on Friday night, and Celtic captain Callum McGregor didn’t try to hide from them.
Antony Ralston and McGregor both played for their country when Steve Clarke’s team got off to the worst possible start in the EURO 2024 event.
Also, playing the Germans would be tough, especially since they are hosting the tournament.
But Scotland’s effort was not even close to good enough. They gave the German midfielders a lot of room to move around on the field. Clarke and his team made a big mistake because their attacks took advantage of a defense that was too weak.
McGregor, who is always straightforward and honest, told the media on Saturday that Scotland just didn’t get close to their opponents.
Callum McGregor says sorry to his fans
“It leaves a sour taste in the mouth when you wake up this morning and realize you haven’t done yourself or your country justice,” the midfielder told Football Scotland. “When we get to these tournaments, we want to show people that we’re a good country with good people and good players.”
The band has to say sorry to the fans for not giving them a show they could be proud of. We stick together, and we’ll try to give everyone the goal we want in the next two games.
“Was it a failure of strategy or of mind, or both?” Most likely, it was a mix of the two. Not getting close to game-changing players. That’s a problem when they have great players and you don’t make them work hard and give them a free night.
“We didn’t run the game as well as we should have.” When you’re three down, it’s tough because the place is packed with fans and the players are playing with a lot of confidence because they are top players. Once the machine starts to turn, it’s very hard to get back.
“We didn’t get off to a good start, and it’s hard to get back on track once it gets away from you.” It’s clear that we made a mistake, and now we need to try to fix it.
Britain still has time
Some commentators singled out McGregor during ITV’s coverage of the game, but there are no one to blame for Scotland’s poor showing last night.
In fact, I think the Scotland boss should be criticized. Germany tore the Scots apart technically, and Clarke’s team played so badly that it looked like they were already down.
They still have time to save their cause and make progress with the group. To be fair, though, neither Switzerland nor Hungary will be simple to beat. McGregor and Scotland will have to be a lot more brave to get points.
