After spending his first loan season at Parkhead in 2023–2024, Paulo Bernardo is desired by Celtic on a permanent basis from Benfica.

The Portuguese midfielder made 33 appearances for the Bhoys [Transfermarkt], tallying four goals and three assists during the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers, who has a domestic double to his name, has made it plain that he is interested in signing Bernardo. It is also known that Celtic is attempting to renegotiate his buyout clause, which is said to be worth approximately £6 million, but the precise amount is unknown.

It is thought that negotiations are going well beyond the suggested relocation, and in an effort to expedite the closing process, add-ons and a sell-on provision will probably be included.

New details about the price Celtic could spend for the 22-year-old this summer have now surfaced.

Stephen McGowan of The Daily Mail (print edition, page 64) reports that Celtic intends to pay £3 million up front for Bernardo and an extra £500,000 in add-ons, making the total estimated value of the potential trade £3.5 million.

Additionally, a sell-on clause will be included in the contract, and “sources close to the player” hope that a settlement will be reached by both sides.

Because Bernardo is an academy product, Benfica would receive the full initial cost, but Rodgers has been persuaded and is willing to approve a transaction as he prepares for the upcoming campaign.

Even with the lengthy bargaining process, assuming Celtic reaches their aim in the stated price range, this would still have to be considered a very successful transaction for the team—especially considering his initial buyout clause.

It is anticipated that bodies would enter and exit Parkhead, therefore keeping some continuity in midfield will be beneficial for 2024–2025.

Given that Bernardo is a reliable individual who is probably going to continue becoming better in Glasgow, a deal should close soon.
