Celtic
Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers broke the silence and gave his reason why Callum McGregor’s retirement from international football is good for the club and not a major setback
Brendan Rodgers has rendered his assessment of the potential benefits of Callum McGregor’s retirement from international football for Celtic in the long term.
Earlier today, the captain of the Hoops team disclosed that he had reached a resolution to cease playing for Scotland following a discussion with Steve Clarke.
McGregor concluded his international career with 63 appearances, and he was a part of two successful European Championships and numerous successful qualification campaigns. It is no accident that the Tartan Army’s fortunes began to improve when he was incorporated into the organization in 2017.
However, it appears to be the appropriate decision for both the player and the nation. The Celtic captain has the potential to extend his club career, while Scotland has the opportunity to incorporate some newer players into the engine room.
Rodgers has responded to his retirement decision by outlining the potential advantages for Celtic in the years ahead.
Brendan Rodgers gives tribute to Callum McGregor
Rodgers has suggested that McGregor’s Celtic fitness could be significantly improved by his “rest and recovery” during international breaks, as reported by Sky Sports Scotland.
He declared, “I conversed with him, so I was cognizant of his thoughts.” Listen, Callum has scored seven goals and earned 63 appearances for his country. He has been an exceptional servant, and I believe that he is now contemplating the next phase of his career, during which he can dedicate himself entirely to Celtic. However, his career for his nation has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“There is no doubt that this is excellent news for Celtic, as it allows him to recuperate and rest during the international breaks.” The quantity of games that this individual performs is truly spectacular. Callum’s mind is perpetually preoccupied with the game, as he is constantly striving to enhance his skills. He never has a day off.
“I am confident that the international breaks will be beneficial to him in the small moments when he can recover from the physical and mental challenges of being Celtic’s captain, as his appetite for improvement is remarkable.”
Scotland’s invitation to Callum McGregor is entirely logical.
Last year, McGregor surmounted a season-ending scan to carry Celtic to the finish line in their pursuit of a domestic double. He demonstrated unwavering dedication to the cause before departing for Euro 2024 with Scotland.
His fortitude was truly remarkable, despite the fact that it was accompanied by a significant amount of risk upon reflection, despite the risk of a flare-up.
It is impossible for that to occur again, given his age. Celtic will seek to extend his influence for as long as possible, which is why his decision to take control of his international retirement is a positive development.
McGregor, who is recognized as the driving force behind the Bhoys, can now relax during the break, confident that he is not exerting himself to an excessive extent.
