Celtic hit by transfer setback after Fabrizio Romano confirms verbal agreement

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill looks set to miss out on a key transfer target, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the player is on the verge of joining another club.

The Bhoys head into what could be a defining Scottish Premiership fixture this weekend, as they prepare to face league leaders Hearts at Tynecastle. Currently six points adrift, defeat would leave Celtic facing an uphill battle in the title race.

Celtic have already strengthened this month, bringing in right-back Julian Araujo and striker Tomas Cvancara on loan from Bournemouth and Borussia Mönchengladbach respectively.

O’Neill praised Cvancara’s attributes but warned against placing too much pressure on the forward.

Despite those additions, Celtic’s recruitment work is expected to continue. The club have been linked with Crystal Palace winger Jerusun Rak-Sakyi and Girona attacker Yaser Asprilla.

However, Romano has confirmed that Celtic’s pursuit of Asprilla has come to an end, with Galatasaray agreeing a loan deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy.

The clause is reportedly tied to appearances and could see the Turkish side pay close to £20 million.

With that move now off the table, O’Neill may be forced to turn his attention to alternative options as the window progresses.
