Celtic nearing agreement to land highly-rated talent for O’Neill

Celtic are reportedly just “one step away” from completing their second signing of the January transfer window, according to journalist Izak Sucic.

The Hoops have already added Bournemouth right-back Julian Araujo on loan and now appear to have edged ahead in the race to sign Hajduk Split’s highly-rated Niko Sigur.

The 22-year-old is a versatile option, capable of operating as a defensive midfielder or at right-back, and is expected to strengthen Martin O’Neill’s squad.

O’Neill returned to Celtic Park this week on an interim basis until the end of the season following Wilfried Nancy’s brief and unsuccessful eight-game tenure. Speaking after his reappointment, the Northern Irishman confirmed Celtic are prepared to go “all out” in the January window.

With Celtic currently sitting third in the Premiership table, six points behind leaders Hearts, reinforcements are seen as vital. Sucic revealed on social media that Celtic are now poised to beat interest from Premier League strugglers Wolves to secure Sigur’s signature, despite earlier delays caused by Nancy’s departure.

If completed, the deal would see the “huge talent” arrive to bolster a defence that has conceded more goals than Hearts, Rangers and Motherwell this season.

Celtic are also working on strengthening their attack. Reports from France suggest the club are closing in on Ivorian winger Jocelyn Ta Bi from Maccabi Netanya, with the forward expected to sign a long-term contract after completing his medical.
