Celtic have turned to a familiar face by appointing Martin O’Neill as caretaker manager until the end of the season, and the club could now be closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window.
Celtic ready to push hard in January market
Supporters will feel a sense of relief following the end of Wilfried Nancy’s brief and unsuccessful spell in charge. While the Frenchman clearly has coaching pedigree, his time in Glasgow proved that he simply wasn’t the right fit for the club.
With O’Neill back at the helm, Celtic appear set for a more aggressive approach in the transfer market. The veteran manager has already signalled that the club will look to strengthen as they attempt to secure a fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title.
Speaking after his appointment, O’Neill said:
“We’re going to have to add to the squad in some way if we can. January is never an easy window — it’s difficult to get exactly who you want — but we do need reinforcements and we’re going all out to try and make that happen.”
Celtic’s drop below their usual standards this season has underlined the need for fresh faces, with Jocelin Ta Bi and Ignacio Laquintana both linked to moves to Parkhead following the loan arrival of Julian Araujo. Time is now critical if the Hoops are to claw back top spot from Hearts.
Celtic beat Wolves to Niko Sigur deal
According to journalist Izak Ante Sucic on X, Celtic are now on the verge of securing the signing of Hajduk Split’s Niko Sigur, having moved ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race for his signature.
Negotiations had stalled following Nancy’s departure, but the deal has since been revived and is now said to be “one step away” from completion. The Canadian international, who can operate either as a defensive midfielder or at right-back, would offer valuable versatility to O’Neill’s squad.
Sigur has registered one goal and one assist in 22 appearances this season, and his ability to fill multiple roles could prove useful as Celtic look to stabilise their campaign. Where he ultimately fits into O’Neill’s system remains to be seen, but all signs point to the Hoops edging closer to a significant January addition.
