Celtic’s Alistair Johnston Undergoes Surgery on Persistent Hamstring Injury
Celtic and Canada right-back Alistair Johnston has had surgery to address a recurring hamstring problem, a setback that has disrupted his 2025–26 season. The 27-year-old shared the news on Instagram, describing the past few months as some of the most challenging of his career.
“I’m happy to say that I successfully underwent surgery today to repair my hamstring,” Johnston wrote, “and hopefully this will be the first step in putting this injury behind me for good.”
Since joining Celtic from CF Montréal in early 2023, Johnston has been a dependable presence under both Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers. However, this season’s injury recurrence has halted his momentum, just as the club navigates a turbulent period following Rodgers’ resignation in October. Interim manager Martin O’Neill is working to steady the squad amid a wider run of injuries.
Johnston first suffered the hamstring issue in August during Celtic’s Champions League qualifier against Kairat Almaty. He briefly returned in October but was forced off again during the Europa League tie with Sturm Graz. Scans later confirmed a tear, necessitating surgery. Anthony Ralston has filled in at right-back during Johnston’s absence, while medical staff will carefully manage his recovery.
Despite the setback, Johnston remains optimistic: “Thank you for the support during this time and I can’t wait to be back fully fit later this season for a title push and a home World Cup.” He is expected to be sidelined until after the new year.
Celtic and fans alike wish him a speedy recovery.
