Celtic are closely monitoring Andy Robertson’s contract situation at Liverpool and could consider a move to bring the Scotland international back north on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old is due to see his deal at Anfield expire at the end of the season, and there is increasing belief that Liverpool may allow him to depart without a fee.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Celtic would be keen on the left-back’s signature, although they are unlikely to be the only club interested.
Several European sides are understood to be tracking Robertson’s future as he looks set for a new challenge away from the Premier League. Atletico Madrid were among the clubs to show interest last summer but were unable to finalise a move before the transfer window closed.
Liverpool’s stance on Robertson remains uncertain. Football Insider reported on 28 October that contract talks have yet to reach an agreement, though the club still hope to extend his stay.
However, with Milos Kerkez now viewed as the preferred option at left-back, expectations are growing that Robertson could be on his way out.
Brown believes Liverpool have reached a point where moving on makes sense. He suggested the club feel they have enjoyed the best years of Robertson’s career and that Kerkez’s arrival signals a shift in direction. A return to Scotland, he added, would be a logical next step.
According to Brown, Robertson would be an excellent fit for Celtic, who are likely watching developments closely should he become available.
While left-back is not considered a priority position, a player of Robertson’s calibre would be difficult to ignore if the opportunity arose. He also suggested the prospect of returning to his homeland could be appealing at this stage of his career.
Meanwhile, Celtic are hoping for a late flurry of transfer activity before the window shuts. The club have made only one signing so far this month, despite Martin O’Neill’s desire to strengthen the squad in their push for the SPFL title.
Football Insider reported on 9 January that Celtic are targeting a striker and a centre-back, with both positions viewed as areas of concern.
Injuries to Kelechi Iheanacho and Cameron Carter-Vickers have heightened the need for reinforcements, forcing the club to remain active in the market.
Sources say Celtic are working around the clock to identify high-quality additions before the deadline, with O’Neill hopeful he will receive backing to bring in key players before the window closes.
