Celtic set to sanction move for 27-year-old player amid Araujo transfer developments

Celtic FC open to Anthony Ralston exit amid Julian Araujo transfer developments

Celtic could be prepared to let Anthony Ralston leave this summer if the 27-year-old decides he wants more regular first-team football.

The right-back is entering the final year of his contract at Parkhead, and while the club are not actively pushing him out ahead of what would be his 12th senior season, they would be willing to sanction a sale should he seek a fresh challenge. That stance could become clearer if the Hoops pursue a permanent deal for Julian Araujo.

Ralston has not started a Scottish Premiership match since early January, and a full-time move for Araujo would likely push him further down the pecking order. With Alistair Johnson also expected back from injury before the campaign concludes, competition at right-back is intensifying.

Araujo’s impact sparks permanent talk

Since arriving on loan from AFC Bournemouth in January, Araujo has quickly established himself in Martin O’Neill’s plans. The Mexico international has started seven consecutive domestic fixtures and recently underlined his importance with a dramatic late winner at Kilmarnock.

Although his loan deal does not include an automatic option to buy, his early performances have prompted calls for Celtic to explore a permanent move. Araujo himself has left the door open to extending his stay in Glasgow — a scenario that could directly affect Ralston’s future.

Financial implications loom

Celtic’s transfer planning may also hinge on their European prospects. Financial expert Stefan Borson recently suggested the club could face significant wage reductions across the squad if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Missing out on a top-two finish in the Premiership would mean no place in Europe’s elite competition for 2026–27, potentially triggering contractual wage clauses. The Hoops already felt the financial impact this season after exiting at the qualifying stage.

With a tight title race unfolding and squad decisions to make, Celtic’s summer could hinge on both on-field success and key transfer calls — including whether Ralston remains part of the long-term picture.
