Celtic transfer latest as update emerges on Austrian star Xaver Schlager

Celtic’s reported interest in Xaver Schlager is among the most striking transfer links to surface in recent days, with reports from Germany suggesting the Scottish champions are attempting to progress a deal for the midfielder.

At 28, Schlager is approaching a pivotal stage in his career. His contract with RB Leipzig is due to expire this summer, placing his future under scrutiny and making him an appealing target for clubs willing to move decisively.

A regular Austria international with 49 caps and four goals, Schlager offers a level of experience rarely available to Celtic. Despite rotation at Leipzig, he has made 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring twice.

However, his value extends beyond statistics. Schlager is a dynamic, high-intensity midfielder capable of operating both as a defensive anchor or in a box-to-box role.

He is tactically disciplined, well suited to pressing systems, and shaped by spells at Red Bull Salzburg, Wolfsburg, and Leipzig, alongside consistent involvement with the Austrian national team.

Celtic face competition for his signature. Both Roma and Juventus have been linked with Schlager in recent weeks, highlighting the quality of player involved.

Leipzig’s own transfer plans could also influence matters, with reports suggesting the Bundesliga club are interested in Celtic midfielder Arne Engels — a factor that may accelerate Schlager’s potential departure.

From Celtic’s point of view, the attraction is clear. Schlager would arrive as a proven, European-level midfielder capable of adding control, intensity, and experience to the centre of the park. He would not be a long-term project but someone ready to contribute immediately, particularly in demanding domestic encounters.

With Celtic currently six points adrift of Hearts in the Premiership, the margin for error is tightening. Strengthening the squad has become a necessity rather than an option if they are to revive their title challenge and reassert domestic authority.

That said, doubts remain over how realistic a move would be. Given Schlager’s profile and likely wage demands, there is scepticism over whether Celtic would be prepared to meet the financial requirements, even with his contract nearing its end.

Elsewhere, progress is being made, with Celtic close to finalising a deal for Tomáš Čvančara, which would address one area of need. Still, it is clear that more reinforcements are required.

Midfield, in particular, has been a recurring concern in terms of physical presence, tempo, and experience. In that context, Schlager fits the brief perfectly. Whether Celtic can compete financially with interest from Serie A remains uncertain — but the opportunity is there.
