Celtic’s Callum McGregor is fervently seeking to prevent another European near miss, stating, “We’ve tried and failed pretty much most of the time.”
Celtic captain Callum McGregor is resolutely committed to dispelling the label of “nearly men” in European competitions by securing advancement in the Champions League.
McGregor and his colleagues are poised to secure a position in the play-offs, contingent upon their ability to triumph over the Swiss champions, Young Boys, in their home match this evening.
At the time Celtic last advanced from the group stages in 2013, the 31-year-old had not yet participated in a first-team match. In recent seasons, Celtic has garnered some commendations, albeit with a limited accumulation of points. However, they have the opportunity to increase their total to 12 points and extend their unblemished streak in the tournament to five matches this evening.
McGregor stated, “We have endeavoured and encountered failure on numerous occasions; thus, this represents a significant advancement for the club, and there is a collective desire among all to be involved.” “We have performed exceptionally well thus far; however, we do not aspire to be regarded as the team that nearly succeeds.
“Celtic experienced a divergent commencement in the competition, scoring five goals against Slovan Bratislava, only to subsequently concede seven against Borussia Dortmund. Since that time, they have exhibited greater stability, securing draws against Atalanta, Club Brugge, and Dinamo Zagreb, in addition to achieving a 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig.
McGregor believes that “a slight increase in maturity in the performances” has positioned Celtic favourably for qualification. “The midfielder remarked, ‘I believe we are exhibiting improved defensive capabilities when engaging with the ball; we are demonstrating greater compactness.'”
“We acknowledge that it is not feasible for us to consistently assume the role of the aggressor in the game; we cannot perpetually pursue the game.”
“You are competing against formidable teams comprised of skilled players who possess the ability to inflict damage. Consequently, there are instances when it is necessary to endure challenges and exercise patience, awaiting the opportune moment within the match.”
“I believe we have exhibited a greater level of maturity in our gameplay. Furthermore, the composition of the team possesses considerable speed and quality, which enables us to capitalise on opportunities during turnovers. In such instances, we can advance the ball with a single pass, thereby becoming a significant threat in the match.”
“In addition to our standard football performance, which is typically commendable at this level, we are now demonstrating significant improvement in our defensive capabilities. I believe this enhancement has been a substantial factor in our success.”
