Frank Onyeka has slipped down the pecking order at Brentford and could be offered a way out this winter, with Birmingham City and Coventry City both interested in the midfielder.
According to the Daily Mail, the Championship rivals are monitoring the situation closely as they look to strengthen their squads in the second half of the season.
Birmingham City are eager to close the gap on Coventry City and push up the table, even if such ambitions still feel some distance away.
Their intent is clear, however, with the Blues reportedly joining league leaders Coventry in the race for Brentford’s Frank Onyeka. Securing the 28-year-old would represent a significant statement signing for either club.
While Onyeka has fallen behind former England captain Jordan Henderson in the midfield hierarchy at Brentford, his pedigree and experience would make him a major asset in the Championship. The Daily Mail claims Brentford are open to allowing Onyeka to leave this winter, with Coventry City hoping to land him on loan while Birmingham City have also made their pitch.
Since arriving in England from FC Midtjylland, Onyeka has been a reliable figure for the Bees, making 87 appearances in all competitions and contributing one goal and six assists. His high-energy, combative style and top-level experience would suit a promotion-chasing side.
He is also a regular for Nigeria, earning 41 caps and starting four matches during their recent AFCON campaign, which ended in a semi-final defeat to Morocco.
With international duty now over, a decision on Onyeka’s future may not be far away as both Birmingham City and Coventry City weigh up their options.
Both clubs would benefit from his arrival, but current reports suggest Coventry City could be the more suitable destination. Birmingham are targeting a physically dominant midfielder, though links to Girona’s Jhon Solis indicate they may not need multiple additions in the same role.
At Coventry, Onyeka could offer something different in Frank Lampard’s midfield.
His intensity and defensive strength could complement Matt Grimes well, while adding competition to options such as Josh Eccles, Jamie Allen, and Kai Andrews. For the Sky Blues, it could be a smart move to bolster an area of the squad as they push for promotion.
