Chris Davies has labelled Willum Willumsson a “success” at Birmingham City, despite admitting the side lacked attacking edge when the Icelandic midfielder featured this season.
Willumsson completed a move to NEC Nijmegen last week, becoming one of 13 senior departures sanctioned by Blues during the window.
Injuries disrupted the 27-year-old’s campaign, including a lengthy spell out after Christmas, and Birmingham scored just twice in his five Championship starts, drawing blanks against Leicester, Sheffield United and Watford.
Davies praised Willumsson’s professionalism and character, describing his attitude as “exceptional,” but acknowledged fitness issues prevented him from finding rhythm.
While the boss insisted he was not pushing the midfielder out, he understood the player’s desire for more regular football, with a switch to the Netherlands seen as a better fit. Despite his struggles this season, Davies said Willumsson played a key role in the club’s League One success and deserves recognition for his contribution.
