Newcastle United
“Could not be agreed”—What position Newcastle United FC are in the English Premier League transfer window table right now after the huge spending made by rivals club
It was well known that Newcastle United was unhappy with the summer transfer window. The Magpies also failed in their attempt to sign England back Marc Guehi. United decided not to make any big-money moves this summer, so talks to sign the Palace star went on for a long time without a deal being reached.
As a result of having to meet PSR standards in the first half of the window, many clubs’ major investment window was cut short to just July and August. Several Premier League teams made big investments during this time. You could say that Chelsea spent the most money during the window again, but they also moved players on. Of course, they had to, since Enzo Maresca had a 45-person group at one point this summer.
- Chelsea – £200.8m
- Brighton – £194.6m
- Man United – £180.5m
- Aston Villa – £148.3m
- Tottenham – £125.3m
- West Ham – £121.5m
- Ipswich Town – £106.4m
- Southampton – £98.6m
- Nottingham Forest – £93.8m
- Arsenal – £91.6m
- Bournemouth – £87.8m
- Brentford – £82.4m
- Fulham – £77m
- Leicester City – £73m
- Crystal Palace – £65.4m
- Wolves – £62.6m
- Newcastle – £57.4m
- Everton – £42.2m
- Liverpool – £35.3m
- Man City – £21m
We still don’t know if Newcastle was smart to keep their powder dry, but the losses of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh haven’t added much to the team’s strength. Eddie Howe will be hoping that this season’s better injury record and the return to action of Sandro Tonali will make up for it. Last year’s nightmare situation made progress very hard to make.
Why did Newcastle spend more than their Premier League rivals? The ranks that Transfermarkt released show how far down United is, though there are some surprises on the list.
Transfermarkt says that Newcastle has spent a total of £57 million this summer, which puts them 17th on the list of teams that have spent the most money. Most of that money went to Lewis Hall’s final move from Chelsea. William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos also got money. John Ruddy and Lloyd Kelly were able to sign for free.
That’s only half of what new Premier League team Ipswich Town spent. Chelsea spent more than FOUR times that, and Brighton was right behind them. Manchester City, who won the title, and Liverpool, who is in the running for the title, are both BELOW Newcastle on the list, with Pep Guardiola’s team spending the most.
The club’s net spend, or the difference between how much it spent and how much it brought in, is £8m. This puts United near the top of the table when it comes to net spend. That explains why Anderson and Minteh left, putting Newcastle in fifth place in the table of teams that spent the least.
With a profit of £116 million, Man City is in first place. Everton, Wolves, and, most importantly, Crystal Palace are all making more money than United. That helps explain why they wouldn’t lower their Guehi price.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle can make an investment in the January transfer window. However, when clubs have to deal with PSR in June of next year, there could be some interesting moves.
