Coventry City in negotiations for Premier League youngster as Lampard targets loan move

Coventry City are reportedly in discussions with Crystal Palace over a potential loan move for winger Romain Esse.

Frank Lampard is eager to strengthen his wide options during the January transfer window, with the 20-year-old right-sided attacker said to be among the Sky Blues’ targets. According to Telegraph journalist John Percy, Coventry have already opened talks with Palace, although interest from other Championship clubs remains. Percy wrote on X: “Championship leaders Coventry have held talks over signing Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse on loan. Other Championship clubs interested but Frank Lampard hopeful of agreeing a deal soon.”

Esse came through Millwall’s academy before breaking into the senior side, making 61 Championship appearances and scoring six goals for the Lions. His performances earned him a reported £12 million move to Crystal Palace last January. Over the past year, he has gone on to feature eight times in the Premier League.

When asked by CoventryLive for an update on potential signings following the opening of the transfer window, Lampard remained tight-lipped, saying: “We’re obviously talking, but there’s no news to give. I can’t talk about players until they may or may not be in the building.”

Despite a mixed festive period that included a 2-0 defeat to Ipswich and a 1-1 draw with Charlton, Coventry remain eight points clear at the top of the Championship. They round off the holiday schedule with an away clash against local rivals Birmingham City on Sunday.
