Coventry City transfer stance revealed as Frank Lampard eyes Premier League goalkeeper signing

Coventry City are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Anthony Patterson, but questions remain over whether the Sunderland goalkeeper is the right fit.

Recent reports suggest the Sky Blues are considering Patterson, who is currently out of favour at Sunderland and on loan at Millwall. The 25-year-old academy graduate has made 140 Championship appearances and kept 44 clean sheets, though his performances have divided opinion at times.

Patterson is a solid Championship-level goalkeeper with valuable experience and age on his side, making him a reasonable long-term option. However, if Coventry secure promotion—something that now looks increasingly likely—they may need a higher-calibre and more consistent option between the sticks.

That’s where Carl Rushworth comes into the conversation. He is widely seen as having a higher ceiling and has already impressed during his loan spell, showing greater consistency than Patterson. Investing heavily in both players—especially with Patterson under contract until 2028—could prove unnecessary.

Coventry are expected to sign two goalkeepers this summer, but spending big on both would be questionable when one position could be filled via a loan or free transfer. If promotion is achieved, the club would benefit from Premier League appeal and financial backing, strengthening their chances of securing Rushworth permanently.

Ultimately, while Patterson remains a capable option, a move for him appears less convincing—particularly given his lack of Premier League experience—making Rushworth the more logical choice for Frank Lampard and his side.
