previous years, Cristiano Ronaldo has been a consistent presence at Ballon d’Or ceremonies; however, he was absent from Monday’s event. Ronaldo has the right to attend all future ceremonies as a former Ballon d’Or winner, regardless of whether he is a contender for the top prize. However, Ronaldo, much like his former adversary Lionel Messi, declined his invitation and reportedly did not vote for the Kopa Trophy recipient. Vincent Garcia, the chief of the Ballon d’Or award, stated in an interview with The Times that “winners have the right to return to all future ceremonies; however, they do not all attend; some are extremely upset with us.”
“I don’t know for certain Cristiano is, I don’t talk to him directly, but I know for example that former winners vote for the Kopa Trophy – for the best young player – and Cristiano didn’t vote last year and he didn’t vote this year either.” Unsurprisingly, the Kopa Trophy was awarded to the Barcelona prodigy, Lamine Yamal, a talented teenager, following a remarkable breakout season. As a Kopa Trophy recipient, Yamal followed in the footsteps of his fellow La Masia graduates, Gavi and Pedri. Matthijs de Ligt, Kylian Mbappe, and Jude Bellingham are also previous winners. Nevertheless, Ronaldo’s absence occurred in the midst of a tumultuous evening of events in Paris, during which no representatives from Real Madrid attended the event. The coveted trophy had been a top contender for Vini Jr; however, a late twist on Monday afternoon resulted in Rodri of Manchester City becoming the favorite. The Real Madrid delegation did not attend the French capital as a gesture of solidarity, despite the fact that they received numerous accolades on the evening. The Gerd Muller trophy was shared by Mbappe and Harry Kane, Carlo Ancelotti was named Manager of the Year, and Real Madrid was awarded the Club of the Year trophy.
Rodri continued to be the center of attention, as he became the first City player to receive the award in over 60 years and the first Spaniard to do so. The 28-year-old expressed his satisfaction with his accomplishment by stating, “It was an incredible night for me.” One of my primary objectives is to enhance each game. “I would like to express my gratitude once more to those who acknowledge my contributions to the game.” I never entertained the notion of winning the Ballon d’Or as a child; however, I have been competing at the highest level in recent years.
