Celtic set an early tone in the Champions League by beating Slovan Bratislava 5-1 in the first game on Wednesday.

Arne Engels set up Liam Scales’s fierce headed goal in the 17th minute at Celtic Park. In the second half, Scales scored himself from the penalty spot.

Celtic’s second goal of the game was scored by Kyogo Furuhashi just nine minutes before Engels’ penalty, which was given because Danylo Ignatenko pulled Alistair Johnson without a good reason.

On the hour mark, Switzerland defender Kevin Wimmer scored a beautiful outside-of-the-foot goal to cut the deficit. However, Daizen Maeda quickly regained the lead 10 minutes later after he linked up with Reo Hatate.

With four minutes left, substitute Adam Idah scored the final goal by securing James Forrest’s pass to finish a convincing win.

Celtic is firing on all cylinders, according to the data.

Engels was only the second player in Celtic’s Champions League history to both score and set up a goal on his debut. The first was Sweden’s Henrik Larsson against Juventus in September 2001.

The team led by Brendan Rodgers was also totally dominant in every way, scoring 3.22 expected goals (xG) compared to Bratislava’s 0.30.

Also, it was only the second time in the tournament that Celtic scored four or more goals in a single game. The first time was in an October 2001 4-3 win over Juve.

In a European Cup or Champions League match, Celtic had five different scores (not counting own goals) for the first time since September 1973 against TPS Turku. The scorers were Dixie Deans, George Connelly, Harry Hood, James Johnstone, and Thomas Callaghan.
