Ralph Hasenhüttl Unlikely to Make Southampton Return After Will Still’s Dismissal
Ralph Hasenhüttl is not expected to make a sensational return to Southampton following the club’s decision to part ways with Will Still on Sunday, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The Saints are actively searching for a new head coach but are said to be taking their time to ensure the right appointment. Sporting director Johannes Spors is currently compiling a shortlist of potential candidates for the managerial vacancy at St Mary’s. Despite speculation linking Hasenhüttl with a comeback, sources close to the club suggest he is not among those being considered, even though he was recently spotted watching the team in action.
The Austrian, who guided Southampton between 2018 and 2022, was seen attending their 3-1 defeat to Bristol City last month as a guest of Robins boss Gerhard Struber. That appearance had sparked rumours of a possible reunion, but Sky Sports now reports that such a move is highly unlikely.
It’s also understood that former Saints manager Russell Martin, who was dismissed by Rangers in October, is not expected to be approached either—despite support for his return among several players and backroom staff.
Southampton decided to sack Will Still after a poor run of results left the club sitting 21st in the Championship table, just one place above the relegation zone. The 32-year-old managed only two wins from 13 league matches, with a 2-0 loss to Preston North End proving to be the final straw.
Still’s short-lived tenure—lasting only five months—also saw his coaching staff, Ruben Martinez, Clement Lemaitre, and Carl Martin, depart from their roles. The club will now turn its focus to stabilizing results and finding the right figure to lead them back up the table.
